Tourette's Syndrome is a motor disorder characterized by involuntary, repetitive vocal outbursts of profanity or other language inappropriate to the context. It is categorized as a behavioral syndrome since it can be controlled and sometimes even prevented with pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral therapy treatments. Although most cases are not life-threatening, Tourette's syndrome is known to be associated with a considerable number of health complications such as: anxiety, heart problems, asthma, depression, insomnia, stress ulcers, and tics. The only known treatment for Tourette's is the use of neuroleptic drugs, which in most cases are effective but have serious side effects such as hyperactivity and memory loss. The first course of action when faced with Tourette's syndrome is usually prescribing neuroleptics such as Clomipramine (Anafranil) in an attempt to alleviate the repetitive speech patterns. Anafranil is proven to be very effective in the short term but long term use of these drugs results in patients showing greater compulsions to use the drug..
