My boyfriend is a little older, and although he's always been open about his feelings, we never did anything about it until one night after we broke up and before I decided to tell him. He told me that he thought my mom would really like it when he was "his girlfriend" rather than just his girlfriend. I found this to be mildly offensive to me, because all of his girlfriends are young women in the beginning, and none of them have ever claimed to be his girlfriend in any way.
