The probability of a population of face neurons representing a familiar face in the same frontal view as a different, similar face is much higher than chance. This is supported by a study that compared the activity of neurons in the facial cortex of macaques. When faces matched, the correlation coefficients were calculated for each pair and used as population-based measures of similarity. Among the four groups, the two most similar facial pairs were ranked in descending order of similarity.
